Our heritage

State Institute for Nitrogen (GIA) was established in 1931. Then, in 1943 GIA was rearranged into GIAP by association with GIPRO Azot (project organization for nitrogen industry). By 1975 eight GIAP branches were set up: Severodonetsk (1949), Dzerzhinsk (1953), Kemerovo (1954), Novomoskovsk (1956), Chirchiq (1959), Grodno (1973), Togliatti (1975).

Core GIAP Institute (Moscow), as well as Severodonetsk, Novomoskovsk, Dzerzhinsk, Dneprodzerzhinsk GIAP brancheshad their R&D facilities. In 1976 GIAP was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. Starting with 1992 all GIAP branches became independent organizations located in Russia and CIS. In 1994 the core GIAP Institute (Moscow) got a new name of JSC “GIAP”.

The world’s largest nitrogen industry was developed due to scientists and engineers of GIAP. That industry comprised about 70 ammonia units (from 55 up to 450 kta), 87 nitric acid units of 120 kta, 12 nitric acid units of 380 kta, 23 ammonium nitrate units, 6 caprolactam units of 50-80 kta, 15 methanol units with combined capacity of 3664 kta, 5 acetylene units. The unique ammonia pipeline Tolyatti-Odessa was built, which allows exporting liquid ammonia to many regions of the world. GIAP fulfilled various projects in Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Germany, China, Cuba and Romania.

Over the past ten years, GIAP has carried out a significant number of revampsin ammonia, nitric acid, ammonium nitrate units aimed at consumption reduction, air emissions decrease, bringing existing plants to new requirements, increasing capacity, etc.
